Q. What is the operation known as gastro­enterostomy?

A. In this operation a loop of the intestine is attached to the stomach and an opening made between the stomach and the intestine so that food can pass from the stomach into the small intes­tine without passing through the pylorus or duodenum. This operation is rarely indicated except in cases in which the plyorus has become obstructed by an ulcer, cancerous growth, or some other cause. The operation is sometimes performed for relief in cases of ulcer of the duodenum.
