Q. What is the nature of hookworm?
A. This disease is one of the most prevalent, most
harmful and most certainly curable of all diseases.
It is more or less prevalent through out the world.
More than half the population of the globe are exposed to this malady.
The disease was known to the ancient Egyptians, although its cause was not understood. It is less than a hundred years since
the discovery of the hookworm by an Italian
physician. It was
first discovered in this country in Porto Rico in 1899. Three years
later it was discovered in the southern states. It is believed that the
disease was brought to this country through the slave trade. In some parts of
the South ninety per cent of the whole population are found affected by this
disease. It is more frequent in country districts than in cities. It is especially
prevalent among the so-called mountain whites of the South.
