Hookworm

Q. What is the nature of hookworm?

A. This disease is one of the most prevalent, most harmful and most certainly curable of all diseases. It is more or less prevalent through out the world. More than half the population of the globe are exposed to this malady. The disease was known to the ancient Egyptians, although its cause was not understood. It is less than a hundred years since the discovery of the hookworm by an Italian physician. It was first discovered in this country in Porto Rico in 1899. Three years later it was discovered in the southern states. It is believed that the disease was brought to this country through the slave trade. In some parts of the South ninety per cent of the whole population are found affected by this disease. It is more frequent in country districts than in cities. It is especially prevalent among the so-called mountain whites of the South.
